31 otherwordly sea creatures discovered in South Atlantic

The ocean’s hiding some deep secrets.

An oceanic expedition off Brazil has discovered 31 otherworldly new critters, including ghostly invertebrates, animals living inside their own bodily fluids and other creatures seemingly better suited to deep space than the deep blue sea.

“The largest habitat on Earth, the midwater, is filled with incredible animals we are only just starting to understand,” said the expedition leader, Dr. Karen Osborn of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in a statement.

The international team of researchers, who were stationed aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor (too), happened upon the marine menagerie while surveying the tropical South Atlantic Ocean.

They were specifically investigating the midwater — the segment of ocean situated between the sunlit layer and the ocean floor, which is Earth’s “largest and least explored habitable ecosystem,” per the survey.

Using advanced imaging systems and genome sequences, they were able to confirm and describe the aforementioned dozens of denizens of this aquatic lost world.

Finds included ghostly gossamer worms, comb jellies that propel themselves along with glittering appendages, and single-celled organisms that were paradoxically big enough to see with the naked eye, Science Alert reported.

The team also discovered siphonophores, colonial organisms related to jellyfish and corals, and tadpole-like critters called larvaceans that erect houses from mucus and are more closely related to humans than invertebrates.

Also present in this remote environment, which is one of Earth’s least understood ecosystems to its volume and inaccessibility, were some familiar faces: a translucent glass squid and a pelagic octopus consuming a bright red sea jelly.

“I continue to be fascinated by the fantastic variety of solutions they have evolved to survive in this formidable environment,” Osborn gushed.

These miraculous finds were a credit to state of the art tech that allowed scientists to study the inhabitants in a matter of days rather than years.

Part of the challenge was studying these critters delicate, gelatinous bodies without damaging them.

To circumvent this, the researchers outfitted the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian with the DeepPIV (particle image velocimetry) instrument and the EyeRIS (remote imaging system).

These employed laser scans to generate 3D images of the critter, precluding the team from having to wrest the animals from their homes.

Meanwhile, a shadowgraph camera, developed by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, allowed the researchers to snap the critter’s silhouettes, revealing some features that didn’t show up in the laser scans.

The researchers deployed Stanford University’s Squid microscope to observe the interaction between living cellular structures and the glass skeleton of a single-celled microbe called a protist.

This marked the first time this device has been used in this manner.

“It’s an incredible honor to not only view and experience this rare and inspiring midwater life, but also to be able to work towards describing and sharing that life broadly through the use of novel, non-invasive technologies,” exclaimed Dr. Kakani Katija, principal engineer of the Bioinspiration Lab at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

‘World’s ugliest man’ has disease that turns muscles into bone

Godfrey Baguma is the first to proclaim it: “I am the ugliest man in the world! The whole world!”

Back in 2002, Godfrey, now 63, took part in the competition for Uganda’s ugliest person and won.

While most people would be pretty heartbroken to earn such a title, Godfrey lives with an extremely rare life threatening and condition called fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), also known as “stone man disease” — so standing out with such a superlative made him feel special.

“When I won the title for being the ugliest man, I was like, this is who I am,” he says in an exclusive clip from a new episode of “Most Extreme Humans,” airing Wednesday, June 17 at 9pm ET on TLC. “I’ve made it this far, I’m still good for something. It gave me confidence.”

TLC

What is FOP?

The muscles and connective tissue of people with FOP gradually turn to bone over the course of their life. This process starts in childhood, when the neck and shoulders become frozen, and gradually moves down through the limbs, restricting movement.

If muscles around the mouth and jaw turn to bone, it can block speech and eating. Bone expansion around the ribcage can limit breathing.

“This disease attacks the muscles. They grow and turn into bone there is a lot of pain,” Baguma said.

What’s especially frightening is that any kind of injury (like a fall or surgery), and even viruses like the flu, can cause bone to grow even faster.

Even injections like vaccinations or numbing at the dentist’s office might cause extra bone to form.

Swelling is a major problem of FOP as new bone presses on lymphatic vessels, obstructing the flow of lymphatic fluid, and causing the liquid to pool in a limb.

Baguma’s condition is extremely rare, affecting one in a million people worldwide, with only several hundred cases ever recorded.

TLC

People with FOP have some options for treatment, including a drug that limits new bone formation, which was approved by the FDA in 2023. They may also take antibiotics because of their increased risk for respiratory infection, and corticosteroids to help with pain and swelling.

People like Baguma also need special shoes and braces to help walk and go about daily life as bone stiffens the limbs.

Godfrey’s story

Baguma was born in a small village in Uganda, where he faced ridicule and discrimination.

“Over the years, many people have called me ‘gorilla,’” he says in the new episode. “Some call me ‘monkey,’ some call me ‘baboon.’ This is normal. I’m used to it now.”

He first noticed something was wrong when he experienced abnormal swelling to his cheek at age 10.

Still, he went undiagnosed well into adulthood, going on to have eight children — six with the love of his life, Namande Kate.

“I told her that I didn’t choose to look the way I do and that if she feels I am a burden, she is free to leave me,” he previously told KFM.

TLC

However, she told Barcroft: “Godfrey’s not handsome on the outside, but he has a good heart. I wish people would see him the way I see him.”

About a decade ago, Dr. Tony Wilson, the head of medicine at Mbarara Hospital in Uganda, performed an MRI and finally diagnosed him. He was reassured that he could not pass the condition on to his children.

All the while, he has refused to let this condition define him. He’s pursued music, motivational speaking and comedy.

He encourages others with messages of self-acceptance and striving to overcome adversity and systemic discrimination.

Baguma shares his story on “Most Extreme Humans,” a new show on TLC telling the stories of people living with rare medical conditions and overcoming the odds.

Blake Lively attempts to extend Justin Baldoni legal battle even further

Blake Lively sought to extend her legal battle against Justin Baldoni by requesting additional time to present all materials to the court.

On Tuesday, the “Gossip Girl” alum filed a letter to the court, saying that she would have trouble meeting the June 22 deadline she was given to file her initial brief on the “appropriate measure of fees” that Baldoni would owe her due to her hectic schedule.

The letter, obtained by Page Six, stated that Lively and her lawyers “have a number of conflicting personal and professional obligations, including international travel.”

“One of Ms. Lively’s lead attorneys, Mr. Gottlieb, who will need to review and approve any billing submissions and sign any affidavit on behalf of the Willkie firm, is currently out of the country,” the doc stated.

The actress requested “an additional seven days” to submit her initial brief.

The newest filing comes two weeks after Lively, 38, took Baldoni, 42, back to court after they settled their explosive legal battle.

According to court documents obtained by Page Six, Judge Lewis Liman addressed damages related to the “Five Feet Apart” director’s dismissed $400 million defamation lawsuit against Lively.

Lively requested that her “It Ends With Us” co-star cover her legal fees and costs from the defamation case — which was thrown out last November.

On June 12, the judge decided that Baldoni must pay Lively’s legal fees related to the suit, per court documents obtained by Page Six.

The court has to assess how much the dad of two will pay.

In May, Livley settled her 2024 suit against Baldoni, in which the actress claimed the actor sexually harassed her on the set of “It Ends With Us.”

Both Lively and the “Jane the Virgin” alum earned no money in their lawsuit settlement. However, sources told Page Six Hollywood that their legal teams made $60 million combined through the process.

The “A Simple Favor” is now plotting a Hollywood comeback.

National Action Network demand LAPD bodycam footage after dog executed during Knicks celebration

Anti-police activists are demanding the release of body camera footage after an LAPD officer shot and killed a family dog while celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA championship win in Canoga Park over the weekend.

The incident has sparked outrage among neighbors and generated a massive online fundraising campaign, but it has also become the latest rallying point for activists who have long clashed with the LAPD over police accountability issues.

At a Tuesday morning press conference outside LAPD headquarters, activists demanded that the department immediately release body camera footage and identify the officers involved according to FOX 11.

The incident has sparked outrage among neighbors and generated a massive online fundraising campaign, but it has also become the latest rallying point for activists who have long clashed with the LAPD over police accountability issues. abc7

“The tragic killing of Jameson was unnecessary and unwarranted,” said Najee Ali, Senior Organizer of the Los Angeles National Action Network. “We demand immediate accountability, which can only happen through the prompt release of the body-worn camera footage and the names of the officers responsible for shooting and killing Jameson. The public deserves transparency, and the family deserves answers.”

Ali argued that officers should never have remained at the residence once they determined Marie Marseille was not in danger.

“All they had to do was turn around and leave. Instead, we now have a beloved dog killed by LAPD, and we want the body camera to be shown to us,” Ali said.

Jameson, a beloved Golden Saint Berdoodle owned by Marseille, was fatally shot Saturday night after officers responded to reports of a woman screaming inside a condominium complex on Jordan Avenue.

According to police, officers arrived to investigate what they believed could be a domestic violence incident after neighbors reported hearing screams coming from Marseille’s unit. Witnesses later said the homeowner had been enthusiastically celebrating the New York Knicks’ championship victory.

Police said the large dog was with its owner when officers asked her to secure the animal. Marseille briefly closed the door before reopening it, allowing Jameson to slip outside.

“The tragic killing of Jameson was unnecessary and unwarranted,” said Najee Ali, Senior Organizer of the Los Angeles National Action Network. FOX11

The LAPD said in a press release that the dog then “charged” at officers, prompting one officer to open fire.

The shooting has since become the focus of a campaign led by the Los Angeles chapter of the National Action Network, which has made police accountability and criminal justice reform central priorities.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign established in Jaminson’s memory has exploded online. As of Tuesday night, the fundraiser had raised nearly $150,000, far surpassing its original goal of $10,000.

“Because, unfortunately, LAPD has a long history of controversial shootings of black people in LA,” Ali said.

“Now they’re killing black people’s dogs, and that dog had every right to live, just as you and I.”

The National Action Network has advocated for police accountability measures, special prosecutors in police-shooting cases, anti-racial-profiling efforts, body-camera policies, and reforms intended to increase oversight of law enforcement.

Neighbors described hearing chaos erupt after the shooting.

Ali argued that officers should never have remained at the residence once they determined Marie Marseille was not in danger. FOX

In cellphone video recorded at the complex, a distraught woman can be heard screaming moments after the gunfire.

“Oh my God! Oh my God,” a woman cried. “I cannot believe this is happening. I cannot believe this is happening.”

“We were just so happy. We were just so happy. We were just celebrating the Knicks. We were f—g celebrating the Knicks,” the woman screamed.

Raymon Alvarez, who lives across the street, told ABC7 the emotional reaction immediately caught his attention.

“The screaming I heard was like, ‘Ah! Oh my God! Oh my God!’ Like just, pure screaming,” Alvarez said.

When he returned home, he heard gunfire.

The LAPD has not publicly released body camera footage from the encounter, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under internal review.

Emily Ratajkowski’s racy viral essay to be shopped around for book deal

Emily Ratajkowski is shopping a book based on her viral essay for The Cut that reveals candid details about the end of her marriage and active love life afterwards, Page Six Hollywood has exclusively learned.

Publishing insiders told us on Tuesday about the planned book that will be based on the model’s candid essay titled, “Motherf–ker: After becoming a single mom, I spent several years compulsively dating. I was trying to figure out what kind of woman I wanted to be.”

The piece certainly hints at what could be a blockbuster book as a more modern “Sex and the City” in the “Call Her Daddy” and Tinx era from the author of the 2021 tome, “My Body.”

emrata/Instagram

Ratajkowski doesn’t name names in The Cut essay. But a tome would likely spark an epic guessing game.

During her time being single, the model was allegedly linked to famous dudes including Brad Pitt, Pete Davidson, Eric Andre, Harry Styles and Shaboozey. She’d also been spotted out with Austin Butler, though sources said they were just friendly.

The book would also seemingly be a hot film project, and could shed further light on the star’s dramatic breakup from “Uncut Gems” producer Sebastian Bear-McClard as well as her subsequent romantic escapades and life lessons.

“Read what I discovered about power, men, sex and most importantly: myself,” the model posted on Instagram to her nearly 28 million followers to announce the essay last week before it blew up.

Getty Images for Primark

In the piece, filled with juicy anecdotes, Ratajkowski revealed that after her 2022 split from Sebastian Bear-McClard — and what had become a sexless marriage — she went into a period of “compulsive dating,” and, “decided to f–k my way into a new kind of woman,” while, “doing it for the plot” became her mantra.

She detailed her dalliances with a string of suitors, including an ineptly dirty-talking “Elder Millennial,” a “Vegan Graffiti Artist with impeccable posture,” the “Chef who thought he might have chlamydia,” a “Spanish Gen-Zer who couldn’t stop sending me nudes” and a “heavily self-medicated Son of a Billionaire with questionable politics,” as well as, “several Italians” and, of course, multiple DJs.

Post-separation, the newly single mom and model, 35, cast herself as a real-life villain character she called “sexual but scary,” and a drinker of many gin martinis on the dating scene. But after a spree of encounters, she later finds her edgy archetypal creation to be as much of a “silly game of performances with no substance” as when she’d been misguidedly “playing the good girl” in her 20s.

Getty Images for Gucci

“Six months after my son was born, my husband and I stopped having sex,” Ratajkowski wrote. “Less than a year later, we separated.” And, “Before my separation, I’d never had a one-night stand. I’d never slept with someone the same day I met them. In fact, I’d only slept with eight people: four of whom had been live-in boyfriends, and one of whom was my male best friend in high school.”

The essay explicitly details her subsequent sexual conquests: “I thought I’d get some great orgasms and a few funny stories on the way too,” the author recalls of the experience. EmRata also learns along the way that, “many men are turned on by motherhood,” while her female friends are turned on hearing about the anecdotes of sleeping with anyone besides their husbands.

The fact that she’s already penned a book, plus the booming viral numbers on The Cut essay and its racy content could be an enticing package for publishers who are increasingly looking at social media numbers as barometers for what to buy.

Said one top publishing source, “It sure seems like the story is still unfolding.” Stay tuned….

Dana White reveals there were multiple threats against White House UFC event

UFC boss Dana White said that there were multiple threats made against the Freedom 250 fight night at the White House, not just the alleged terror attack — but praised the FBI for keeping it the safest “place in America.”

White, 56, told TMZ Sports that he was “in the loop on all that was happening in real time” over the threats against Sunday night’s outdoor spectacle on the South Lawn, which coincided with President Trump’s 80th birthday.

“There was more than” the alarming alleged plot to use drones and snipers to take out as many people as possible, the UFC president and CEO said.

“These are the kind of events that bring the nuts out, this is normal stuff.”

His insider’s view on threat management left him realizing that “the FBI is so good.”

“I mean these guys are so good at what they do,” White added.

“Listen, here’s the reality: There was no safer place in America to be on Sunday night than in DC.”

Fanatical TikTokkers armed with assault rifles plotted to attack the UFC Freedom 250 after revving each other up over Jeffrey Epstein, billionaires, Israel and a hatred of President Trump, according to court papers and sources who spoke with The Post.

The FBI foiled the zealots’ plans by infiltrating Signal chat groups where they were planning “a coordinated attack” to kill President Trump and other government officials, according to federal criminal complaints and affidavits unsealed Tuesday.

The FBI thwarted a terror plot that involved explosive drones, officials said. Getty Images

“As many and as deadly as we can get,” wrote suspected ringleader Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez in one of the messages, according to court documents.

The zealots’ twisted multi-phase plot included using explosive-laden drones to strike buildings near the sporting event, officials said.

The blasts would spark a mass panic and force the crowd to flee toward a sniper team positioned to take out the unsuspecting victims.

Tycen Proper, 19, was arrested in Knox County, Ohio, in June 2026 and is accused of conspiring with an online group to carry out an attack at a White House UFC event. Franklin County Sheriff’s Office

Then a “second wave” of attackers allegedly planned to storm the White House gate, the officials added.

The terror plot may have involved as many as a dozen people from multiple states. Some of the suspects traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. — about 50 miles south of DC —on June 12 or 13 to make preparations for the attack.

‘Happy Face’ killer warns fellow serial killer Rex Heuermann could be ‘tossed to the wolves’ in prison

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — Keith Jesperson, the “Happy Face” serial killer who has been trading prison letters with Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann, is warning that the hulking former architect could face a reality check when he’s shipped upstate this month.

“The problem with Rex is his size — he thinks prison will be a cake walk because of how big his ego is,” Jesperson, 71, wrote in a text message to podcaster Keith Rovere. “[I] had to tell him the little guys work out too, to beat up us big guys. He will have some fights, even in protective custody.”

The message was shared with Fox News Digital. In it, Jesperson warned that Heuermann, 62, might even be “tossed to the wolves” by prison guards at some point.

“Keith is almost 7 feet tall, and he took a couple beatings,” Rovere told Fox News Digital Thursday. “It’s a numbers game in prison, no matter how big you are.”

Heuermann remains in custody at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead, New York.

He will be moved to a state prison after his formal sentencing on June 17.

When asked if he thinks Heuermann may have more victims, Jesperson, who admitted to killing eight himself, declined to answer.

Rex Heuermann is being formally sentenced today. Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office

“What l think isn’t important,” he wrote in a message to Fox News Digital. “We just have to wait and see on the 17th.”

Dubbed the “Happy Face Killer” for drawings he included in letters to the media, Jesperson said he’d rekindled a correspondence with Heuermann after the latter pleaded guilty, something Jesperson had urged him to do for years.

“He basically has told me thank you for letting him know about the process in the system dealing with [serial killer] cases,” Jesperson told Fox News Digital.

Writing from a prison in Oregon, Jesperson said Heuermann would’ve had nothing to gain by taking his case to trial given the evidence against him — which includes transferred hair DNA from his then-wife and daughter on some of the victims.

Heuermann’s ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, said through her attorney Thursday that she would not be attending his sentencing.

Ms. Ellerup believes this day should be centered on the victims, their families, and the profound impact these crimes have had on their lives,” her attorney, Bob Macedonio, told Fox News Digital. “Out of respect for those who have endured unimaginable loss and suffering, she does not wish her presence to distract from the purpose of these proceedings. Her thoughts remain with the victims and their loved ones as they continue their pursuit of justice, healing, and closure.”

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has said investigators do not believe the family was involved in Heuermann’s crimes.

“Probably why he pleaded guilty and avoid the trials,” Jesperson wrote. “Told him nothing to gain in the trials and everything to lose. Suggested him not to make a statement to the court at sentencing; however, his lawyers might be pushing him to.”

Stay up to date on the Gilgo Beach murders:

Jesperson first reached out to Heuermann within a week of his arrest in July 2023. Since then, he’s sent almost 40 more letters, according to a source close to the family.

“Rex, in New York, has had my letters telling him to deal out to better his placement inside,” Jesperson told Fox News Digital in January. “Yet he is letting it play out.”

Early on, Heuermann responded just once in a handwritten note that was later shared with Fox News Digital, but Jesperson now says he has received more replies after changing his plea in April.

Jesperson first shared Heuermann’s initial reply with “The Lighter Side of True Crime” podcast host Rovere, who provided a copy to Fox News Digital. In it, Heuermann complained about jail food and exercise conditions and fretted that guards might be reading his mail.

The NY Post’s front page detailing Heuermann’s confession. scalle

Heuermann’s attorney Mike Brown had attempted to have groundbreaking DNA evidence obtained from rootless hair samples thrown out. Shortly after the judge denied his motions and scheduled the trial for September, Heuermann changed his plea and admitted to the killings at a hearing on April 8.

He had been charged with seven murders and agreed to confess to an uncharged eighth as part of the plea deal.

Heuermann is expected to receive multiple consecutive sentences of life in prison, at least three without the possibility of parole, at his sentencing hearing Wednesday.

Heuermann, a New York City architect who lived in Massapequa Park on Long Island, has pleaded guilty to the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla and Valerie Mack.

He also took responsibility for the uncharged murder of Karen Vergata.

All of the victims were tortured and strangled, according to prosecutors. Some were dismembered.

Jesperson seen in an unannounced interview with Okaloosa authorities. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office

As part of the plea deal, he agreed to work with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit and allow federal experts to study his murderous psychology.

The Gilgo Beach murders were exposed in 2010 after a woman named Shannan Gilbert went missing in the area, about 45 miles east of New York City along the sparsely populated Ocean Parkway.

While Suffolk County police ultimately deemed Gilbert’s death an accident, they found 10 other sets of remains before they found hers, including several of Heuermann’s victims.

He wasn’t identified as a suspect until new leadership in Suffolk County created a task force to take a new look at the cold case in 2022. Investigators also linked him to remains found in eastern Long Island.

Draft US-Iran deal leaves regime in ‘stronger strategic position,’ think tank warns

The purported draft agreement between the US and Iran aimed at ending the war will leave the rogue Islamic Republic in a stronger strategic position after the conflict is over, according to a nonpartisan think tank.

President Trump and Vice President JD Vance maintain that the prematurely circulating details of the 14-point memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the sides is only a draft and subject to change.

However if true, the version currently making the rounds “grants Iran significant economic relief,” which the regime would “likely” use to attempt to restart its missile, drone and nuclear programs, as well as the Iran-led “Axis of Resistance” military coalition, according to the Institute for the Study of War’s reading of the draft agreement.

The institute points out that Iran could receive additional economic relief by honoring the terms of the MOU, but says it’s seen no indication the regime is willing to make any concessions about their nuclear program that would likely be included in the final agreement.

ISW voiced concerns about “ambiguous language” about the Strait of Hormuz in the draft, writing that Iran will likely seek to exploit the lack of clarity “to try to enforce its control over shipping through the strait.”

It also surmised that the regime is interpreting the phrasing “on all fronts” in a clause about a cease-fire deal to bind Israel to halt its military campaign against Hezbollah and withdraw from Lebanon.

“This interpretation is part of a broader Iranian effort to preserve Hezbollah by trying to secure Israel’s capitulation in Lebanon,” ISW writes.
